Drum Set Introduction

by Garrett Peek
Originally run in Complete Beginning Drum Set Study

The Complete Beginning Drum Set Study is a drum set instruction manual for beginning students. The goal of this book is to teach the drum set drummer the basic coordinations, teach them how to read music, and show them how their knowledge can be applied using the drum set within a musical setting

There are many beginner books available to the public. I have played through and have taught with many of them throughout the years. I have written this book because I have never been able to find one that fits what I feel is important for a beginner student.

This book touches on the coordinations that are necessary to be able to play the drum set correctly. It does not show every possible example for any of the ideas that stated but rather focuses on the most important parts. It is important for a beginner to see the possibilities of the drum set and to develop the basic coordinations before they should be expected to 'perfect' any of the ideas.

Most students want to learn how to play 'rock' music. Most of this book does satisfy that desire. However, I have chosen to include a beginner Latin and beginner Jazz section in this book to show that drums can be played completely differently in the different styles of music. The goal is that by introducing the beginning student to the other styles of music early on, they will see that there is more to playing the drum set well than just 'rock' music.

Tips for using the Complete Beginning Drum Set Study
1. Play the exercises in varying tempos
2. Repeat each exercise between four and sixteen times
3. First play the exercises from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4...etc. Then try the exercises from 1 to 3 to 5 to 2 to 4 to 6 and so on...
4. Practice the exercises with a metronome
Lastly, remember that music is supposed to be fun.
